Olestra-fried snacks fat-free, but not free of concerns
Article Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration has approved Olestra as a fat substitute in foods, but the agency requires products containing Olestra to carry a warning label. Olestra can cause gastrointestinal side effects, such as cramps and loose stools. Olestra also removes vitamins A, D, E, K and carotenoids from foods eaten at the same time. Physicians should caution patients to eat a balanced diet and to moderate their consumption of Olestra.
