Outbreak of cryptosporidiosis at a day camp - Florida, July-August 1995
Article Abstract:
An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis at a day camp in Florida was promptly identified because the Florida State Public Health Laboratory tests all fecal samples submitted for Cryptosporidium parvum. Of 104 people who attended the camp between July 20 and August 15, 1995, 74% developed the symptoms of cryptosporidiosis, which include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Seventy-two children and five counselors were affected. Twenty-four family members who visited the camp during this period also developed symptoms. Stool samples from 16 individuals tested positive for Cryptosporidium parvum. The contamination was traced to an outdoor faucet with a hose that was used as drinking water. Feces had been observed in the area of the faucet, which was not fenced in. Drinking water contaminated with feces is the most common transmission route for cryptosporidiosis. Only 5% of laboratories in a nationwide survey routinely test fecal samples for Cryptosporidium.
