Primary care doctors feeling pay pinch

Primary care physicians salaries during 1996 rose only 1.4%, according to Medical Group Management Assn., with average salaries at $136,217. Specialists' salaries increased to an average of $221,544, an increase of 2.5%. Specialists within the managed care environment averaged $194,000, while other specialists' salaries averaged $261,000. Physicians' salaries are leveling off, according to analysts, because of there is an increase of physicians who are being paid for undercapitated contracts.

The American Medical Association (AMA) is joining with state medical societies to secure Medicaid payments for doctors who treat the nation's 6 million poor Medicare patients. Eighteen states are refusing to make supplementary Medicaid payments after Medicare makes its reimbursement to the physicians who care for dual-eligible patients. The AMA-State Medical Society Litigation Center is pursuing its case with federal health officials and in court.
