Shock therapy
Article Abstract:
The treatment for shell shock, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as it is now known, has progressed since the First World War when servicemen were sometimes shot for their inability to continue active service. The condition received more attention during the Second World War, and, after increased recognition during the Vietnam War, approaches altered to include counselling and behavioural therapy. UK service personnel with diagnoses of PTSD are cared for mainly by the Ex-Services Mental Welfare Society, but PTSD continues to be largely undiagnosed and badly handled by the military.
