Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
Article Abstract:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which affects 11% to 14% of the population, is a puzzling condition with multiple models of path physiology including altered motility, visceral hypersensitivity, abnormal brain-gut interaction, and others. The gastrointestinal and immune effects of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) provide a possible unifying framework for understanding frequent observation in IBS.

Evidence of brain overgrowth in the first year of life in autism
Article Abstract:
Newborn babies who eventually become autistic may have smaller than normal brains at birth and then experience greater than normal brain growth during the first year of life. In a study of 48 children with autism, an MRI brain scan during the first year of life documented this rapid brain growth in 59% of the babies. Only 6% of healthy babies experience this rapid brain growth during the first year of life.

Increased rate of head growth during infancy in autism
Article Abstract:
A study published in 2003 found that some young children who develop autism had increased brain growth during the first two years of life. This could explain why some children with autism have larger than normal heads. However, it is not clear what part this plays in autism and whether it is a true marker of autism.
