Stem-cell research--signposts and roadblocks
Article Abstract:
The National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine have issued new ethics guidelines for the conduct of embryonic stem-cell research, which are derived from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst-stage embryo. Although new guidelines would encourage research using human embryonic stem cells to study diseases and develop new treatments, opponents believe that it is immoral, since deriving new stem-cell lines requires the destruction of human embryos.

An offshore haven for human embryonic stem-cell research?
Article Abstract:
The South Korean veterinarian and stem-cell biologist Woo Suk Hwang plans to offer researchers in the US and other countries a chance to work with embryonic stem-cell lines without making them themselves. The plan offers a possible strategy for accelerating international progress in the field and avoiding some of the legal and regulatory complications of deriving the cell lines in the US.

Stem-cell politics
Article Abstract:
The politics surrounding the human embryonic stem-cell research in the US are discussed. The President's veto of the bill, which would have increased the number of stem cell lines eligible for federal funding, has brought the human embryonic stem-cell research to life as a political issue for many candidates for federal and state offices around the US.
