The whole story
Article Abstract:
Incontinence in elderly patients suffering from dementia is rarely treated as many professionals feel that the problem is caused by detrusor instability (DI). Patients may become depressed and confused about being incontinent, especially if it is due to lack of mobility rather than bladder control. Medication may often lead to incontinence, with a study of one nursing home reporting 84% of incontinent residents taking medicines effecting urinary incontinence. Nursing staff need to regularly take elderly patients suffering from dementia to the toilet.

In search of relief
Article Abstract:
Good nursing care for older people with continence difficulties begins with assessment, which forms the basis for continence promotion strategies. It is important to find out what is causing the incontinence and to work closely with the patient to remove these factors. Making an accurate initial assessment can save a great deal of time later on, and allows underlying causes to be identified. Incontinence episodes can be greatly reduced if the factors causing the incontinence are gradually removed.

A new perspective on an old problem
Article Abstract:
Continence problems affect many elderly people in residential care but assessing the severity and psychological impact on individuals is difficult. A continence clinic offers the reassurance of trained and sympathetic medical staff who involve patients in their own recovery programme.
