Unhappy returners
Article Abstract:
Nurses returning from aid work abroad can find it hard to fit back into British society, after experiencing starvation and emergency situations. Returners need practical help in finding a job, but counselling is lacking. A survey of 64 aid workers, health-service managers and agencies showed that 73% did not receive sufficient debriefing on return to Britain, according to International Health Exchange, charity. They had mainly left aid work for financial and job security. Nurses taking up emergency posts can find themselves facing disciplinary action on return, as proper notice of leave had not been sought. Half of 277 health service managers interviewed were unaware of procedures for getting release for short-term contracts abroad.

The pretenders
Article Abstract:
People often pose as medical professionals, even though such an act is a criminal offence. Some health care assistants may pose as a registered nurse in order to gain a higher salary, but bogus nurses may be people with personality problems or those who have a psychological desire to help people. Impersonators may like the feeling of being needed by a patient in a vulnerable position, with people more likely to pose as a nurse than a doctor. Nurses' qualifications should be routinely checked by nursing agencies, and some claim it is virtually impossible for a bogus nurse to be given a job.

A challenging experience
Article Abstract:
Margaret Green considers membership of the United Kingdom Central Council a fulfilling and satisfying experience. She has contributed to the formation of education policy and codes of conduct. She has travelled widely to facilitate nurses' access to the council. She considers the UKCC is responsible for representing the profession while protecting the public. However, difficult decisions may sometimes alienate both public and professionals.
