c-myc Protooncogene polypeptide expression in endometriosis
Article Abstract:
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus (endometrium) becomes located in other areas of the body, usually the pelvis or abdomen. The cause of this disorder is not known and, while steroid hormones such as estrogen have been implicated, other factors are almost certainly involved. Such factors could include protooncogenes (genes that direct the manufacture of proteins that regulate cell division and development differentiation), one of which is called the c-myc gene. This gene encodes a protein that is associated with cell division, and it may be through expression of c-myc that steroid hormones exert their effects on cell replication. To determine whether c-myc expression is abnormal in endometriosis, samples of endometrial tissue found in the normal location (within the uterus), and tissue found in abnormal pelvic sites (ectopic tissue) were analyzed from 15 women with infertility or endometriosis. The samples were evaluated for the presence of a protein encoded by the c-myc gene called c-myc 62. All samples were taken during the proliferative phase (the beginning of a new cycle) of the menstrual cycle, when endometrial cells are dividing at a rapid rate. Results showed that c-myc 62 was present in both normal and ectopic endometrial tissue, indicating that it could play a role in the growth and development of endometrial cells. The effect of age on female fecundity
Article Abstract:
The relationship between age and female fertility was assessed in 210 women. The subjects were not shown to have noticeable features causing infertility and were undergoing artificial insemination. The study involved 751 donor insemination cycles. The subjects were divided into five age groups: 19 to 24; 25 to 29; 30 to 34; 35 to 39; and 40 to 45 years. In addition, the subjects were divided into two larger age groups of 19 to 34 years and 35 to 45 years, for analysis of larger groups. Fertility and conception rates of the two groups were assessed each month. There were significant differences in fertility and conception rates between the five small age groups and between the two larger age groups. Ninety-two percent of donor insemination cycles involved the use of frozen semen. The average fertility was estimated at 16 percent each month. These findings suggest that there is a decline in female fertility with age. In addition, the study shows that frozen semen can produce acceptable fertility when sufficient numbers of motile, or active, sperm are used for each procedure of donor insemination cycle. Cauterization of hydrosalpinges before in vitro fertilization is an effective surgical treatment associated with improved pregnancy rates
Article Abstract:
Surgically closing diseased Fallopian tubes can improve pregnancy rates in women with infertility who undergo in vitro fertilization. If the tubes are not closed, fluid can collect inside the uterus, which could damage the developing embryo.
