Employment, Earnings and Hours, New York State
Article Abstract:
Tables of current labor statistics are given for New York state employees in nonagricultural establishments according to industrial sector from 1939 to 1981, and then for the last three months of 1982 and every month of 1983. In October of 1983, over 7,269,000 people were working. This was an increase of slightly under 200,000 persons since January 1983. Totals for manufacturing, mining, construction, transportation and public utilities, wholesale and retail businesses, finance, insurance and real estate, as well as the service sector are given. There were noticeable increases in construction, wholesale and retail businesses and the service sector. Extensive tables feature statistical labor data for smaller industrial divisions.

Article Abstract:
In June of 1983, New York State had 1,315,000 persons working in all manufacturing jobs. Women represented slightly more than thirty-five per cent of that total. In the New York combined area, 700,000 persons were employed in all manufacturing jobs. Almost forty-one per cent of these persons were women. Total manufacturing employment in the upstate area was 51,000 persons, of which slightly more than twenty-six per cent were women. County totals are given for the upstate area as of May and June of 1983 and June of 1982.

New York State enjoyed a total of 7,264,000 employees in nonagricultural establishments in June of 1983. Sector employment is analyzed in this table from 1939 to 1981 by year and in monthly totals for 1982 and 1983. The sectors include manufacturing, mining, construction, transportation, wholesale, finance and services. The overall June 1983 total is 44,000 persons greater than in May of 1983.
