Entry-level requirements for HR professionals
Article Abstract:
When employers hire entry-level human resources personnel, they seek individuals with an undergraduate business administration degree. Preferred course work emphasis is in communications skills and technical personnel management areas such as compensation and labor relations. Employers also want employees whose skills can be utilized immediately. Nearly 65 percent of 106 respondents to a recent employment practices survey said that they would hire an inexperienced entry-level person if the individual had other appropriate preparation. Managers generally do not regard American Society for Personnel Administration accreditation to be critical, but view internships as a valuable experience.

Is there a need for performance appraisals?
Article Abstract:
Some problems connected with the standard performance appraisal are avoided by maintaining documentation about poor or outstanding events as they occur. The alternative method classified 88% of employees as average. The documentation will reveal the 7% who are poor or the 5% who are outstanding. Communication to the employee about the poor or outstanding event at the time it occurs enables employees to know their situation. The appraisal process then becomes a review of the documentation file. The establishment of goals and progress review dates can strengthen the alternative appraisal method.
