Global HR
Article Abstract:
The increase in international business enterprises has increased the importance of global skills for human resources (HR) executives. Companies that hire foreign employees to work in their various international divisions will derive benefits from the employees' different perspectives on products, services, markets, and international requirements. The ability of an HR manager to globalize the staff depends on the size of the company, its operations, and the degree of centralization. Ferro Corp, which has had operations in foreign countries since approximately the 1920s, has recently become a global firm. Ferro's HR department helps prospective expatriate employees in many ways, including creating an overseas compensation plan based on cost-of-living differences, helping employees find housing, and providing foreign language training.

Amgen's latest discovery
Article Abstract:
Biotechnology firm Amgen Inc. operates according to a multicultural management philosophy. The Thousand Oaks, CA-based company acknowledges that it has to adopt a global mindset because, being in a science-driven business, it has to be where research is being conducted, where it can form the most advantageous academic and medical collaborations, and where there is market potential for its products. For this reason, it has set up operations in England, Australia, Canada and Switzerland, and plans to establish a presence in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. An important ingredient of Amgen's global growth strategy is its multicultural recruitment formula. Part of its staffing strategy is to hire talented scientists, managers, and medical information and marketing representatives from any part of the world.

Beyond global HR
Article Abstract:
The international economy has expanded the human resource (HR) function. Personnel managers in multinational corporations are being challenged by the cross-cultural work environment. Personnel managers must have operational, diplomatic, and analytical skills to deal with diverse cultures. The characteristics of managers that can lead to expanded career opportunities include having a geocentric attitude, multilevel communications expertise, and the ability to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in a multi-cultural work environment. The global work environment has expanded the HR function to include such activities as communicating the corporate mission, both internally and externally.
