The optical disk solution
Article Abstract:
Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos, NM) uses an optical disk computer system to address problems associated with with employee records management. The human resources department at the laboratory manages 500,000 employee documents and processes 72,000 pages of personnel records every month, using 43 filing systems, 83 personnel forms, and 13 data bases. The benefits of using an optical disk system include secure, off-site storage of documents, making space available for other uses; reduced risk of loss, damage, or theft because the documents are stored securely and users see only on-line electronic images; and the ability to allow two people to view one document at the same time, saving managers time and effort. Documents can easily be printed from a computer-generated list.

Sell technology internally
Article Abstract:
A well planned communications program can persuade employees to accept technological advances in their work environment, resulting in a more efficient use of resources, increased productivity, and improved competitiveness. Technological advances can change work performance by affecting job skills, the roles and influence of employees, and privacy. The areas for human resources (HR) personnel to consider when fostering acceptance of technology include communications strategy, user participation, rewards, and job structure. HR personnel should involve employees in the implementation process, analyze and categorize user attitudes to ensure technology fits users' needs, correctly time the pace of technology implementation, and educate the users on the benefits of the change.
