The worksite is the best place for health promotion
Article Abstract:
On-site employee health planning programs are becoming more common, sensible, and cost-effective, especially as regards such modifiable behaviors as smoking, drinking, drug-taking, stress management, diet, and exercise. Smoking may be addressed in smoking cessation programs. Drinking and drug use may be treated with special Employee Assistance Programs. Proper stress management can be taught on the job as well. Nutritional habits may be modified by techniques as simple as replacing cafeteria food with lower calorie meals and removing 'junk' food from vending machines. On-site exercise programs are frequently more effective than off-site private programs because of their convenience. Case studies have shown that promotion of good health habits on the job helps both the employee and the employer. Morale improves, absenteeism and illnesses decrease, and employee-employee and employee-employer relations benefit.

Human resources computerization: a dollars-and-cents approach
Article Abstract:
New technological innovations have made it possible for many personnel management functions to be automated, but to be truly effective, automation must be time efficient and cost effective. A utility company's automation program is analyzed to illustrate the steps that can be taken to control and monitor the progress and direction of automation within personnel departments. Steps the company took to establish cost effectiveness and efficiency include: centralizing the administration of all human resources systems; using a worksheet to determine corporate cost savings before making purchases; and making sure to use human resources systems to evaluate hardware and software purchases to estimate future costs of getting jobs accomplished.

Food service promotion: dollars and sense solutions
Article Abstract:
Because people are such fastidious eaters, corporate food service managers need to make their food appealing to employees and to promote their services. Several promotion programs are discussed, including: a 'Fling into Spring' promotion which gave away frisbees with the purchase of bacon cheeseburgers, an 'Eat it' promotion that stressed good nutrition, and a country of the month promotion program. Promotions designed to inspire food service program employees are also considered, such as a 'Winner's Program' that rewards first rate job performance with recognition and awards.
