Values must blend in overseas operations
Article Abstract:
National Semiconductor (Israel) Ltd faced the challenge of developing a new decison-making process that integrates the best features of the Israeli culture and the culture of its US parent company. Specifically, this process had to capitalize on Isreali workers' high technical ability and personal integrity while at the same time downplaying their low managerial ability. The decision-making process must also be designed in such a way that it would take advantage of the US employees' tendency to be systematic, but leaving out features of the American culture incompatible with the Isreali culture. A committee was formed to study how such a decision-making process could be developed. The implementation team was able to successfully introduce the process to the organization with the support of management, communication to employees, engineering manager training, department-level implementation, team-level implementation and team- and development-level follow-up.

Through the eyes of the teen expatriate
Article Abstract:
The experiences of teenage children of overseas employees can be a very traumatic yet, at the same time, rewarding experiences. Teenage children who go through culture shock are often those who are ill-prepared for the transition. Among the suggestions provided to third-culture kids for coping in their new environment are involvement in extra-curricular activities in the new environment, close family relationships, and pets. Coping with the foreign culture consequently brings several benefits to the teenagers such as character development, greater awareness of foreign cultures, and the ability to deal with crises as they happen.
