BBC Rights Agency fills team

BBC Rights Agency head Debbie Manners has hired commercial managers to oversee individual program category, a move that completed the agency's new management line-up. New recruits include BBC News commercial manager Nick van Zwanenberg, who will be in charge of establishing branding opportunities for BBC News output in the UK and other countries, and Jamie Munro, most recently BBC Worldwide's publishing licensing manager, as commercial manager. The new setup also calls for Mike Kemp, who currently work for BBC Worldwide's Sydney, Australia, office, to become manager for commercial programs.

Front Row PPV 'way ahead' of expectations

Front Row, a cable pay-per-view (PPV) movie service, has posted its first viewing figures, indicating a maximum of three movies are being purchased by one of every three of its subscribers per month. The data reported by Front Row also shows buy rates vary from 29% to 38% of the potential audience in the four months since it started its operations. Subscriptions at Front Row are also higher compared to its rivals. The figures reported by the PPV service impressed its owners, which include NTL, Telewest, General Cable and Diamond Cable, as well as industry observers.

Channel One to close its London and Bristol arms

Channel One, a UK-based cable television service, is closing its London, UK, and Bristol, UK, arms in late September 1998 according to Julian Aston, the managing director of Channel One. Channel One will retain its Channel One Liverpool operation, Channel One's joint venture firm with Trinity Group that will remain as Channel One's only operation. Aston announced that the closure was triggered by the rising competition in the cable service industry resulting to insufficient returns from the operations.
