Booth hails digital launch for October

BSkyB's CEO Mark Booth, has announced the unveiling of the company's digital satellite service on Oct. 1, 1998. The service introduction, which the firm announced on Jul. 30, 1998, two days after British Digital announced its new name, On Digital, also included the move to assume all the cost involved in installing the digital dishes and set-top boxes, estimated at 80 pounds sterling per household, for the service for all its clients. BSkyB, which will increase its yearly advertising expenditures to 60 million pounds sterling, expressed confidence that it will recover the cost of installation in a year.

BSkyB has launched six discounted programming packages aimed at boosting subscription and win the increasing competition for digital subscribers. The marketing program include BSkyB's basic digital satellite (DST), renamed the Family Package, which offers the broadcaster's entire 200 digital channels and priced at11.99 ponds sterling per month. Other packages include four new DST packages, which offer 15 channels each at 8.99 pounds sterling a month and a Value Package, which offers at least six channels for 6.99 pounds sterling per month.
