Birt hails 'vintage year.'
Article Abstract:
BBC's BBC 1 and BBC 2 had a successful year in 1997-98, according to the annual report of Director General Sir John Birt. The report, published on Jul. 15, 1998, said that the two channels had enjoyed strong showings and had proven that programming not commercially driven can more than hold its own against competition. Birt's annual report has also revealed that BBC allocated 63 million pounds sterling in 1997-98 on new digital services. Of the said amount, BBC News 24 used 26 million pounds sterling, 19 million pounds sterling was used on internet service BBC Online and 18 million pounds sterling for general digital start up costs.
