Killjoys and Indians
Article Abstract:
Indian homes now have the possibility of watching as many as thirty television channels in 1995 and could watch as many as sixty by the end of 1996, as a result of satellite broadcasting, versus only two state-owned terrestrial channels in 1991. All the leading international broadcasters are keen to penetrate the Indian market. Doordarshan, the Indian nationalised television broadcaster, has entered into a joint venture with Cable Network News (CNN) and is negotiating with other broadcasters for the lease of transponders for INSAT 2C, the Indian satellite which will start up in 1996.

Britain leads race to develop space
Article Abstract:
Many new television channels are being applied for now that broadcasting has been deregulated, and include dedicated viewing of video jazz, cars and golf. Digital satellite television will be the most popular medium for any future services, and will eventually replace the analogue satellite channels currently in use. With so many channels to chose from, it is important to invest in the ones which will be popular, because large profits are expected if a successful gamble is made.

However, this situation is set to change as a result of the BSkyB bid for Manchester United football club. BSkyB's monopoly could be threatened if On Digital and cable concern NTL become serious rivals for pay television rights or if the Premier League chooses or is forced to give up some of the rights it controls to the leading football clubs.
