Pact hits out at BBC regional spending
Article Abstract:
BBC has been criticized by Pact, an alliance of independent producers, for failure to achieve its regional production goals and for reporting inaccurate regional figures. BBC stated in its report, Statement of Promises to Viewers and Listeners 1998/99, that it spent only 31.3% of its network programming budget to regions in the 12 months that ended March 31, 1998. The report admitted the company failed to achieve its target of spending one-third of its programming budget outside of London, UK, and Southeast. Diane Freeman, deputy chief executive of Pact, argued that the figures reported by BBC is misleading, given that the statistics included 10 of the network's major drama, which were filmed in the regions but were produced by independents based in London, UK.
