Windows rival Linux wins Intel backing
Article Abstract:
Red Hat Software, the US company that markets the Linux computer operating system, will receive an undetermined amount of investment from semiconductor manufacturer Intel and Internet software firm Netscape. Although Linux is available on the Internet and is used by around seven million individuals, Red Hat Software markets an installation CD-ROM, and furnishes technical support. Red Hat Software will utilize the funds from Intel and Netscape to establish an enterprise computing unit, that will furnish larger users with similar support to Windows NT. Although Linux was designed as an alternative to Unix, the latest agreement could reposition the program as a bonafide competitor to Windows NT.

The Specter, which makes use of Silicon Graphic's Origin 2000 server with fiber-channel disk arrays for storing image files, is also capable of delivering high-resolution 2K x 2K files at a maximum of 30 frames per second.
