ASTOR sets the trend
Article Abstract:
ASTOR (Airborne Stand-off Radar) of the UK is most likely to fulfill NATO's mid-term requirement for Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) requirement. The US JSTARS (Joint Surveillance and Attack Radar System) originally convinced NATO of the need for greater battlefield surveillance capability, but the prohibitive cost of the system prompted NATO officials to look elsewhere. HORIZON of France and CRESO of Italy are also in the running, but their use of helicopter platforms make them less attractive than ASTOR.
