Boeing Co has offered the US Air Force (USAF) 60 C-17 transport planes at a cost that is under 15% of prevailing contract prices. The offer, if accepted by the USAF, will increase the service's inventory of the advanced airlifters to 180 from the present 120 units. Article Abstract:
The launch date for the Next Generation Long-Range Strike (LRS) Aircraft program, a new, possibly unmanned program of the US Air Force (USAF) is brought forward from 2037 to 2018. USAF hopes to fund this program by significantly reducing its current bomber inventory but getting Congress to reverse its policy of not permitting old iron to be retired in support of the LRS plan could be an arduous task.
