Airport delays probed as safety hazard
Article Abstract:
The US Department of Transportation Inspector General Kenneth Mead is conducting a probe concerning the airport safety hazards that are caused by flight delays. Mead stated that his office wants to determine whether departure delays were a factor in the 70% increase in aircraft-involved ground accidents over the last five years. The Inspector General's office is examining the departure delay records of the 28 largest airports in the country from 1995 through 1997. The findings of the probe on the accidents, which are also known as runway incursions, will be released in early fall.

Net surfing nets savings for business travelers
Article Abstract:
Reservation systems on internal computer networks or intranets set up by companies are increasingly used by their employees to book airfares, hotels and rental cars. According to American Express Co, airfares bought by employees themselves over company intranets are 15% to 20% cheaper than fares quoted by travel agents. For example, brokerage Charles Schwab Corp claims that in 1999 it saved $3.1 million in airfares and agency commissions by encouraging its employees to book trips themselves.
