Automakers renew spending spree
Article Abstract:
Consolidation in the automobile industry is expected to heat up as carmakers race for the biggest global presence through mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Consolidation began in 1998 when Daimler-Benz AG of Germany bought Chrysler Corp of the US, creating DaimlerChrysler. It was followed by seven major M&As, three deals in year 2000 alone, that include acquisitions by Ford Motors Co and General Motors Corp. A fourth major deal in 2000 is expected between DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi Corp.
