A new advertising trend which combines traditional media and the Web in inducing consumers to become active participants is being used by Tommy Hilfiger, Ford, Country Crock and Nike. For Hilfiger's "Unreleased Cuts" campaign for its Tommy Jeans, print ads featured finalists from an online talent search for unsigned musicians. The print ads then ask consumers to download music from its tommy.com website and select the winner of a $10,000 recording demo deal. Market researchers opine that interactive campaigns provide tremendous opportunities and are very effective among its intended audience.

Star power cranks up heat on ad industry during strike

The advertising industry encountered opposition from the motion picture industry for its proposed flat fee system for network TV ads vs the existing system of paymetn each time the ad runs. The members of the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, headed by Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon, staged a stike against marketers such as General Motors and agencies such as BBDO. The proposal is widely seen as a prelude to coming battles in the entertainment industry over contracts for writers, actors and directors.

Union future at stake in actor strike

The ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) against the advertising industry has become more contentious despite the resumption of their bargaining talks. The SAG and AFTRA is demanding that its members be paid residuals everytime an advertisement is played on network TV while advertisers want to implement a "flat fee" one-time payment to actors who appear on television commercials.
