GM plans truck engines that idle cylinders
Article Abstract:
General Motors will start making V8 truck engines that use only four cylinders part of the time, to be installed first on 2004 models. The displacement-on-demand engines will switch off half the cylinders, increasing truck fuel economy by 8% on the federal test cycle, and by as much as 25% with the right road conditions. Higher fuel economy would translate to one to four miles per gallon, while a two-mile-per-gallon increase would not be uncommon.

Like a Prowler, but it's not
Article Abstract:
Chrysler Corp, the US arm of German-based DaimlerChrysler AG, will unveil on Nov 2, 1999, at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Trade Show in Las Vegas, NV, its truck-inspired Howler, which is based on Plymouth's $43,400 Prowler hot rod. The V-8 engine, 4.7-liter and five-speed vehicle offers a rear-drive set-up that is simpler and less expensive to produce. Consumers will find the Prowler's fuel tank a big plus.
