I.B.M.'s new ThinkPads: the laptop becomes an S.U.V

I.B.M. has just released the new ThinkPad with looks almost as big as a card table but weighs only about five pounds. It is the fastest notebook computer on the market and it costs up to $4,000. It also has a fifteen-inch screen which is the largest for any high-performance portable laptop on the market.

Less expensive lines introduced by Compaq

Compaq introduces two new lines of microcomputers, the Prolinea and the Deskpro/i, and a new line of notebook computers, at prices that are significantly cheaper than the company's previous prices. The Intel 80386SX-based Prolinea 3/25 ZS Model 40 lists for $899 and up and is designed for home use. The Prolinea line is divided into two lines, the ZS and the S. The Deskpro/i include a minimum of 4Mbytes of system memory, the Compaq Q-Vision graphics controller, and other audio and security features. The Intel 80386-based Deskpro 3/33i Model 120 will list for $1,979. The 486-based 4/33i Model 210 will list for $2,549. Compaq's new notebook computers are called the Contura line, and include color screens. The new products are part of the company's effort to tap the low line consumer market and attract customers who are familiar with Compaq's reputation for quality.

Apple introduces several new microcomputers and notebook computers, including the Mac IIvi, Mac IIvx and Mac PowerBook Duo. The Duo is a thin, light-weight notebook computer that can be inserted into an optional docking station with additional monitor, keyboard, extra disk drives and printers. Users who travel but hate the transfer of files and file updating can use the Duo on the road and then slip it into the docking station for use as a regular desktop model. The Duo is available two configurations that cost between $2,249 and $2,969. Apple has discontinued the original Apple Macintosh PowerBook 170, 140 and 100.
