Researchers trying to find ways to turn microchips into lasers
Article Abstract:
Prof. Lorenzo Pavesi and others are experimenting with silicon wafers impregnated with silicon nanocrystals. When struck with blue laser light, the wafer sent more red light out. This light amplification would be useful both in computing devices and fiber optic communications. The next stage of the nanocrystal research is to intensify the beam the wafer creates, by adding micromirrors to it. Then scientists face the more daunting task of getting the chip to generate and conduct electrical energy to create its own light. This is something of a conundrum, because the silicon material is used to begin with because of its semiconductor properties.
