Nissan pours on the macho with controversial ads

Nissan Motor Company Ltd is planning to launch a male-oriented advertising camppaign for its restyled 2001 Frontier pickup. The advertisement is undergoing final market testing prior to its planned debut on Aug 28, 2000. The ad is aimed at the Hispanic markets where a macho appeal is appreciated. Although it is expected to be controversial, Nissan feels that the 'whup-ass' commercial is worth a fight since it would be very effective among the 25-to-35-year-old males that it is targeting.

Nissan drives yearly earnings to record
Article Abstract:
Nissan Motor registered a net income of $2.7 billion, based on revenues of $49.1 billion, for the year ending Mar 31, 2001, up from a loss of $6.5 during the previous year. However, Nissan lost sales and market share in Japan while its European operations lost $224 million. It also lost $685 million from unfavorable currency exchange rates. Worldwide employment also fell to 14,200 in 2000, and Nissan shut down three of its seven Japanese plants.

Ford, Firestone say adhesive is linked to bad tires
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc are coming to similar conclusions about Firestone tire failures on Ford Explorers. The companies are expected to focus on problems in the tire manufacturing process involving adhesives between the tires' steel belts and on the tires' design in the wedge area which is a layer of rubber between the belts. The conclusions appear to exonerate Explorer and tire workers.
