The Asian Battle for Russia's Oil and Gas
Article Abstract:
The economic and diplomatic complexities and intricacies of developing a pipeline from Russia's oil-rich Siberian fields will have serious consequences for Japan and China. The Japanese want the line to run to the Russian shore to the Krylova Cape where a deep-water oil terminal will provide petroleum only a one-day tanker trip away from Japan. China seeks a pipeline that will go to the country's northeastern industrial center to meet demands that will make it surpass Japan in 2005 as the second-largest petroleum consumer. The battle revolves over financial competition to help build the pipeline and conflicting arguments over which decision will best serve Russia's future diplomatic relations with each nation.
