On becoming 'just another country.' (South Africa)
Article Abstract:
South African foreign policy since the end of apartheid has relied too heavily on the world's good will toward its new regime and its president, Nelson Mandela, to be effective. South Africa wants to maintain moral consistency in its foreign policy while prospering economically and serving as a leader of non-aligned developing nations. Its policies on Nigeria, China and Taiwan, and continued arms sales to potentially dangerous regimes have reflected an inconsistency of approach. South Africa should instead, like other nations, clearly define its national interest and act accordingly.
