Western hemispheric integration: free trade is not enough
Article Abstract:
The U.S. policy of free trade for western hemispheric integration suffered a serious setback due to the fall of the Mexican peso. The fall of the peso and the rise of rural conflicts demonstrate that an agreement to enter into a new dynamic free trade area does not launch a developing nation into first world economic and political stability. The people behind this move should therefore consider the consequences and the alternatives of this policy and must also give a second look to the various economic and political problems that have arisen in relation to the regional push toward free trade.

Letter from Paris: cities, Europe, and the global economy
Article Abstract:
Globalization is a process largely fueled by the movement of capital, ideas and technology that will undoubtedly accelerate. While it has benefited people worldwide, it has also been catastrophic in several developing countries. The globalization of Europe has resulted in a renaissance of regions within the continent and created a host of new opportunities. The most important thing Europeans can do in 1999, then, is to envision Europe as a single economic space filled with dynamic economic regions and cities, rather than as a collection of nation states.
