A faster transduction mechanism for the cochlear amplifier?
Article Abstract:
Neuroscientists P. Dallo and B.N. Evans have proposed a mechanism for explaining the speed at which sound signals are transferred through the mammalian cochlea. The cochlea is divided into two chambers by the flexible basilar membrane, which contains sensory hair cells that transport the electrical signals that occur with the innervation of the basilar membrane. Dallos and Evans model involves the extracellular potential in the outer hair cells and the higher frequencies received by these cells.

Neurotrophins gain a hearing
Article Abstract:
Neurotrophins have been found to be a good agent for the prevention of cochlear neuron damage that leads to loss of hearing. The role of neutrotrophins is especially important in counteracting the harmful effects of ototoxic drugs. They are also potentially useful for the survival of cochlear neurons after electronic implantation of alternative hair cells that replace damaged ones.

Active forces in hearing
Article Abstract:
Research on hearing and hearing disorders was discussed at the 2000 annual meeting of the Association for Research in Otoloaryngology. One major topic was the cellular basis of the cochlear amplifier.
