Conceptualizing defense mechanisms from drive theory and object relations perspectives
Article Abstract:
Repression is the most fundamental psychological defense mechanism because it provides the most direct means of transferring threats to the unconscious. Sometimes other defense mechanisms are employed when threatening situations or effects cannot be managed by repression alone. These alternate mechanisms include acting out and self-blame, which are both kinds of displacement behavior. Reaction formation, rationalization and the projection of blame onto others also constitute alternative defenses. Drive theory and object relations interpretations of specific defense mechanisms are provided.

Self and possible selves during the transition to fatherhood
Article Abstract:
A short term longitudinal study integrated the social psychological concept of 'possible selves' with constructs of adult development, to determine differences in aspects of self and parenting amongst fathers to be and fathers of infants. Results suggest that how men see themselves before and after the birth of the first child is significant in understanding their motivation for role change, involvement with the infant and their own psychological well-being.

Possible olfaction-based mechanisms in human kin recognition and inbreeding avoidance
Article Abstract:
Possible olfactory mechanisms and developmental factors in human kin and individual recognition and in avoidance of inbreeding were explored in three studies. The evidence indicated that olfactory cues could assist in mediating favoritism of blood relatives and also in the development of incest avoidance during childhood.
