Household accounts, mental accounts, and savings behavior: some old economics rediscovered?
Article Abstract:
The non-fungability of household financial wealth is examined in terms of its implications on savings behavior. The study focuses on the structures of mental accounts and household accounts and on how these two are related. These descriptions of household wealth are then compared with economists' life-cycle model of household financial behavior. Tentative conclusions concerning the capital accounts and savings of households are discussed.
