Maternal expressed emotion and adjustment in children with epilepsy
Article Abstract:
Childhood epilepsy is linked to raised levels of psychopathology and changes in family relationships. Maternal expressed emotion (EE) was used to study family relationships of children with epilepsy and the link with high risk for psychiatric disorder, based on the Camberwell Family Interview. Mothers exhibited much more emotional overinvolvement and a trend for more hostility towards their children with epilepsy, than towards sibling controls. Further research into the appropriateness of psychological intervention in families where mothers are critical and hostile and whose children exhibit antisocial behaviour, should be considered.

The assessment of expressed emotion in a standardised family interview
Article Abstract:
Expressed emotion is an index used to measure aspects of family life, which in turn are seen as linked to a number of physical and psychiatric disorders. Critical comments by mothers appear to affect treatment response for eating disorders, with better outcomes associated with falling critical comments. Resaearch on eating disorders shows that family interviews can save time and can be helpful as a way of assessing expressed emotion, with applications for other disorders.
