The post-Piaget era
Article Abstract:
Modular theory, theory theory, empiricist theory, and the theory of information processing and social construction are alternative theoretical models contributing to Piaget's theory of cognitive development. The theory theory deals with representations and rules in cognition, the modular theory with innate modules of cognitive structures, and the empiricist view with accumulative process. They clarify the vague concepts of assimilation and accommodation. Information processing and social construction highlight the importance of social interaction and language in cognitive development.

SCADS: a model of children's strategy choices and strategy discoveries
Article Abstract:
How preschool children make adaptive choices among existing strategies and discovering useful new strategies has been studied using a new simulation model called SCADS. The model describes how associative and heuristic knowledge work together to produce these psychological processes. Eight major empirical phenomena involved on simple addition strategies are also explained. Results show metacognitive and associative abilities lead to gradual learning in preschool children. SCADS describe how simple psychological processes can produce cognitive competence in young children.
