Is it time to license graphic designers?
Article Abstract:
An aggressive training and licensing program is required in the electronic publishing industry to ensure a minimum committment from the practitioners to seriously practice their profession. At present, anyone with the requisite equipment can set up practice as a graphic designer, prepress consultant, webmaster or printer. Also, anyone can become a member of professional groups in the field such as the Society of Publication Designers (SPD),the American Institute of Graphics Designers (AIGA) or the Type Directors Club (TDC) by simply paying the fees. Academic Institutions are best suited to be the training centers because a degree carries with it some assurance that the student has been exposed to all the basic technical and artistic aspects of the graphics field. Such a degree will also be helpful for the customer to know that the graphics artist or electronic publisher understands the underlying technology.

Endangered species? The state of the imagesetter
Article Abstract:
Computer-to-plate (CTP) and computer-to-press printing have cut into the market for film imagesetters, but the devices continue to sell. Agfa, Scitex and other film imagesetter manufacturers that also make platesetters continue to enhance imagesetter technology. Agfa's SelectSet Avantra 44XT drum imagesetter has a 44.5-inch width and generates fully imposed output on large presses. Ultre's 5400 and 5800 capstan imagesetters output film or polyester plate material. CTP and direct-to-press printing save money by eliminating film, chemicals, processing and waste disposal, but film imagesetters are less expensive than platesetters of comparable output size and format, their consumables are cheaper, and film is more flexible. Imagesetters will continue to be enhanced in terms of speed, performance and flexibility, and their prices are expected to go down as their quality goes up.

Just the right colors
Article Abstract:
Color management hardware continues to evolve and advance, and prices are coming down, which means graphics professionals have improved control over color. A graphic arts consultant comments, saying color management should be thought of as a process issue. He says trouble managing color usually has to do with the workflow or the production process. A list of new color-management hardware devices, with brief descriptions, is presented.
