Text from faxes
Article Abstract:
Calera Recognition Systems' $149 FaxGrabber is data conversion software that translates incoming facsimiles into editable, on-line format as soon as they are received. The program, which runs under Microsoft Windows, allows the user to access and alter faxes within minutes of receipt. FaxGrabber intercepts and saves the contents of a fax in any of over 45 formats at the user's choice, and the text is available for use in a page layout program. In addition, the conversion of a fax to text can reduce its file size by a factor of 30. Tests determined FaxGrabber's recognition rate to be 97 to 99 percent when working with fine-mode faxes from original laser-printed documents. Photocopies, however, did not travel so successfully. In testing, the utility recognized so little of the photocopy that the document was unusable. Photocopying is often necessary when faxing from a book or a magazine.

A win-win situation?
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's release of Windows 95 is not likely to have a significant impact on the Macintosh market, at least as far as desktop publishers are concerned. Publishers and designers like the Mac because it is both conservative and comfortable, not to mention easy to use. Most designers learned their crafts on Macs, and are not apt to switch to something new simply because it now exists. Thus Apple is wise to focus its marketing in the area of publishing and other arenas where it has a strong following. The Macintosh has become the high-end tool of choice for publishers, designers, and others in specialized areas. This is unlike to be undone by the emergence of Windows 95.
