Seeing ahead: Underpinnings for what is next magazine publishing
Article Abstract:
The magazine industry is facing its most severe challenge since the 1950s with the change in lifestyle and shopping behavior as well as threats from cable TV and online media, which are eroding reader attention and advertiser commitment. However, an understanding of the 'underpinnings' of the future's marketplace may help the industry stay relevant and effective among the many choices available to consumers and advertisers.

The reasons why the publishing sector in Spain languishes in spite of Spanish being second only to English in the number of its speakers are examined. Factors such as poor reading levels, the poor library system in the country and problems with the educational system are found to contribute to the problem.
