Planning for a cheaper future
Article Abstract:
Investment in information technology is of crucial importance to warehouse operators seeking to reduce costs. While most companies realise that efficient logistics are essential to retain competitiveness, few are aware of their total logistics costs, mainly because such activities are ususally isolated and because warehouse costs are often overlooked in favour of other areas. Figures show that warehouse costs represent around 2% of sales. To cut costs, warehouse operators should consider areas such as investment in new technolgy, investment in staff training and attention to warehouse design.

Keeping down overheads with the right system
Article Abstract:
There are several options which companies should consider in order to reduce their warehousing costs. The obvious measure is to seek to cut stock-holding costs, for example by using a stock forecasting programme. After stock holding, the greatest costs arise from labour, and there are several ways of cutting labour costs. A company can optimise its workforce by offering good training, using contract or casual labour for peak loads, and making sure employees have the right tools for the job. Automation and IT equipment can also cut costs, while better use may be made of warehouse space.
