The art of space craft
Article Abstract:
A study looking into how the office environment affected users found they were less concerned about the internal design of a building. The ability to communicate with other workers, the level of noise and privacy were seen as more important. One major problem faced by designers is deciding who are their main clients in a building which may be used by many different types of people. Others point out if offices suit the people who work in them they are more likely to stay with the company. Some companies are reverting to using cellular office design rather than open plan which can be unpopular.

Reach for the sky
Article Abstract:
There has been a rise in speculative development in the area around Gatwick Airport, England, as a result of moves by the airport to attract more business travellers. Three speculatively developed buildings have already been completed in the nearby town of Crawley, England, and a further three are planned. The airport is the main factor attracting potential occupiers to Crawley, but the town also offers good road and rail links. There is strong demand for secondhand property, even though a potential 19,509 sq mt of new space is coming on stream.

Slow crawl
Article Abstract:
There has been very limited demand for new office space in Crawley, England, even though the town offers good communications and attractive rents. This is partly because there is a large amount of high quality secondhand office accommodation available. Speculative schemes are still being undertaken, despite the fact that rents on new office accommodation in the centre of Crawley are falling. The town's industrial and distribution property sectors are performing much more strongly.
