The family owned property company The William Pears Group invests heavily in residental property, such as the purchase of BES repossessions from some of the major banks and building societies in the UK. The company also invests in commercial property, it sold 45 properties for 71 million pounds sterling in 1994. Pears has shown renewed interest in commercial property since 1997. The company comprises of over 40 firms. Pretax profits have risen from 12.9 million pounds sterling in 1997 to 15.6 million pounds sterling in 1998. It is estimated the family are worth 450 million pounds sterling.

A bright light in the North west

Barlows has expanded its property investment operation in the North West of England by purchasing Rowlinson Securities for 46 million pounds sterling in 1997. Barlows has grown rapidly since it was set up in 1987 with assets of 4 million pounds sterling. Barlows has a annual rental income of 8 million pounds sterling and prior to the acquisition of Rowlinson, profits of 1.7 million pounds sterling. Barlows management intend to sell some of Rowlinsons's offices and retail outlets based in the South of England but also have plans to increase company assets to 50 million pounds sterling.

Phillips and Drew turns a searchlight on property
Article Abstract:
Phillips and Drew Director Richard Tanner confirms the investment company is looking to become more involved in managing their property investments. The company prefers to make its own decisions about which stocks to purchase and is known for its strategy of purchasing holdings in companies when they are cheaper. The company manages some 600 million pounds sterling worth of stocks in property. Tanner moved into his new role in Jan 1999. He job will included looking at investments in larger property companies in combination with being part of the team which oversees the pooled funds.
