Wheels of progress
Article Abstract:
The road network in Brighton, England, and Hove, England, is to be improved with funding of 1.2 millon pounds sterling from the Single Regeneration Budget. The new road system will be mainly one-way, with only northbound traffic being permitted to travel up Brighton's London Road. Local property agents have reacted negatively to this approach, expressing the view that the local council should not try to exclude traffic from the town centre. There has been very little office development there since the early 1990s, and rents are still below levels required to make development feasible.

Funding road block brings gamble jitters
Article Abstract:
Delays in beginning work on the construction of a new road linking the M1 and the A1 are causing considerable concern among property agents in Leeds, England. They point out that 80% of industrial land allocated in the city's draft UDP depends on the road being built. It is planned to be constructed under the private finance initiative, but the government has not yet announced the signing of the contract.

Keeping things moving: local opinion is holding firm against road-building
Article Abstract:
Protests from environmentalists and local residents have led to the cutting of two proposed key roads in and around Manchester. Some believe that axing the relief road will not impact the local economy but others feel that everyone will pay the price for increased congestion. However there could be some private funding of smaller roads by developers elsewhere in the Greater Manchester area.
