A country brought low by horror
Article Abstract:
The discovery of a paedophile ring in Belgium is having an impact far beyond the residents of the village of Sars-la-Buissiere, where Marc Dutroux, the head of the ring, lived. Many Belgians feel that top officials covered up the ring, and there are even rumours of Mafia links and international trade in child sex. There has been a particular outcry after claims that the ring could have been linked with Andre Cools, a former deputy prime minister who was murdered in 1991.

Arc of influence puts nations in the shade

They have set up the Atlantic Arc association, which brings together local politicians and regional bureaucrats. This may eventually serve to shift the balance of power in Europe, encouraging people to think in new ways about links with their neighbours.
