Egalitarians versus angry parents
Article Abstract:
Comprehensive education is a very important issue to the Labour party, and the current difficulties within the comprehensive system are therefore a great cause for concern. This issue of education was recently debated at the Labour party conference, and this highlighted very different views within the party. Some members are still keen on the traditional egalitarian approach, while others are more realistic, being able to see the faults in state schools. It is now clear that many families who can afford to send their children to schools other than state comprehensives now do so.

A public finance scandal in the making
Article Abstract:
It is possible to see the UK government's Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in a very negative light. To some observers, this scheme allows the government to announce expensive schemes which would not otherwise have been approved. The private sector is made responsible for the ownership and management of facilities such as hospitals, which were previously fully controlled by the state. It is quite likely that this approach will eventually be revealed as a public spending scandal.
