A nice little learner
Article Abstract:
The UK government's efforts to improve educational standards have focused very strongly on teaching. However, this may be a misguided approach, as it overlooks learning, which is not the same as teaching. No attention has been given to the factors that influence learning and thus how learning can be improved. Learning can only be really effective if students are actively involved. They must be able to assess themselves and understand how to improve, and teaching must be sufficiently flexible to take account of the results of assessment.

Germans give us a lesson Eng Lit
Article Abstract:
A conference held recently in Potsdam, Germany, looked at the theme 'Engendering Realism and Postmodernism: Contemporary Women Writers in Britain.' It was held entirely in English, and included both academic papers and public readings. It highlighted the fact that the UK is extremely insular and provincial, unlike most other European countries. British academics seem to have little interest in developments in other countries, and it would be deemed impossible for a conference to be held in another language.

Aristotle knew it, but we've forgotten
Article Abstract:
Education in the United Kingdom tends to focus on vocational subjects and there is a neglect of education to teach people to become citizens and adults. Prisoners are paid less for studying than for other work, and the only courses that are supported in one prison are business studies and remedial education. There is a distrust of intellectuals in the UK and a neglect of non-functional aspects of education. We need to take a broader approach to education to promote a more civilized society.
