A peace deal with a fuse attached
Article Abstract:
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was forced to make a concession on the timing of Israel's partial withdrawal from Hebron and the West Bank in order to ensure that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu went ahead with this agreement. However, the deal has actually had a more negative outcome for Netanyahu than for Arafat. His tough stance has made Israel more isolated, and his political position has become considerably weaker over recent months. Delaying Israeli withdrawal will also give Israeli settlers in rural areas of the West Bank to prepare to react with violence.

A very strange bird indeed
Article Abstract:
Israelis still have very mixed views about the political personality of prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has now been in power for 100 days. He seems to combine ideological fanaticism with a deep concern for presentation, with public relations apparently being his guiding force. Some observers feel that he is determined to concentrate power on himself, and this seems to have been reflected in his recent decision, taken without consulting ministers, to open an exit to a tunnel from the main Jewish site in Jerusalem.
