A thrilling climax to a political era
Article Abstract:
The 1992 US presidential elections offer a choice between three candidates but Ross Perot is unlikely to win although he has affected the campaign. Bill Clinton's support fluctuated until Jul 16 1992 when Perot withdrew from a New York convention, giving the anti-Bush vote to Mr Clinton. President Bush was considered unbeatable at the time of Operation Desert Storm but a year later his support disappeared. Living standards are of more concern to US citizens than military might since the disappearance of the Communist threat. Suveys show a preference for more interventionist policies.

China will not follow Russia down the stony path of political reform
Article Abstract:
It would not be justified to regard new Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji as a true reformer in the spirit of former Russian General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. At the age of almost 70, he does not represent a new generation of Chinese leader, and China has already begun to establish improved international relations. He will continue the modernization of China's economy, and therefore its political system, that is already taking place. However, he will seek to ensure that much more emphasis is placed on economic reform than on political reform.

Kicking the habit of a lifetime
Article Abstract:
The deal made by Liggett Group, the smallest of the five main cigarette producers in the US, in the largest of class action suits being brought against cigarette companies represents a watershed in the tobacco industry. Until then, no cigarette company had ever been defeated in a lawsuit, even though the industry had been forced to invest heavily in legal costs. This case means that cigarette manufacturers are now no longer immune from prosecution.
